Imperial Oil Limited
Role: oil sands mining. Public-source facility notes for recovered elemental sulfur context.
Oil sands miner at Kearl (bitumen, no on-site sulfur recovery) and participant in AOSP / Scotford upgrading where sulfur is recovered. Not a standalone public sulfur marketer with disclosed Mt/a.
Marketable sulfur: not disclosed Mt/a (not_disclosed). Imperial does not publish a company-level recovered sulfur sales tonnage in standard investor materials reviewed.
Export channel: Indirect via Scotford forming/export logistics for upgraded AOSP streams; Kearl bitumen sulfur is not exported as elemental product from the mine.
Technology: Kearl: mining and froth treatment without upgrader. Scotford: bitumen upgrading with sulfur recovery and pellet export capability.
Facilities
- Kearl Oil Sands: Fort McMurray, AB (mining bitumen)
Paraffinic froth treatment bitumen mine. Public assays cite bitumen sulfur ~3.4 wt%. No on-site elemental sulfur recovery; sulfur remains in bitumen until upgraded elsewhere. - Scotford Upgrader (AOSP stake): Strathcona County, AB (upgrading)
AOSP upgrader recovers sulfur from diluted bitumen. Imperial holds an ownership interest alongside other AOSP partners; Shell operates the complex.
2021–2026 history
- 2021: Kearl bitumen continued without on-site elemental sulfur recovery. Elemental sulfur exposure remained primarily via AOSP/Scotford upgrading interest.
- 2022: Pacific sulfur price volatility affected Scotford pellet netbacks into Vancouver, not Kearl mine-gate elemental sales (none).
- 2023: Scotford area remained part of Edmonton-region oil sands sulfur forming/export complex as Cheecham and Heartland logistics capacity expanded province-wide.
- 2024: No Imperial-specific elemental sulfur Mt/a disclosure identified; market context dominated by Vancouver export growth and Alberta inventory dynamics.
- 2025: Heartland remelt de-bottleneck (to 700 t/d) and planned further expansion increased remelt options for crushed oil sands bulk that can feed molten North America or re-form for Vancouver.
- 2026: AOSP/Scotford sulfur continued to be framed in trade press as Edmonton-area supply (~0.5–0.6 Mt/a class for Scotford upgrader estimate) distinct from Syncrude block stockpile mobilization.
