Canadian Natural Resources Limited
Role: oil sands producer. Public-source facility notes for recovered elemental sulfur context.
Major oil sands miner/upgrader with on-site sulfur recovery at Horizon and sulfur associated with AOSP bitumen upgraded at Scotford (Shell-operated). Facility-level elemental sulfur tonnage not separately disclosed in public filings.
Marketable sulfur: not disclosed Mt/a (industry_context). Trade press places Fort McMurray operators (Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL Horizon) in a regional oil sands sulfur band near ~2.2 Mt/a combined. CNRL-only split is not disclosed.
Export channel: Formed product into Western Canada rail-to-Vancouver seaborne chain; molten domestic movements where contracted. Exact CNRL marketing split not disclosed.
Technology: Horizon delayed-coking upgrader with hydrotreating/hydrocracking and sulfur recovery units expanded across project tranches (public EPCM descriptions).
Facilities
- Horizon Oil Sands: ~70 km north of Fort McMurray, AB (mining upgrading)
Integrated mine, extraction, and upgrader with sulfur recovery complex. SCO capacity ~264 kbpd (two-year average, company disclosures). Sulfur plant capacity not publicly itemized. - AOSP Albian mines: Athabasca region, AB (mining)
CNRL owns Albian mines; diluted bitumen shipped to Scotford Upgrader. Sulfur recovered at Scotford, not at mine face. - Scotford Upgrader (working interest): Strathcona County, AB (upgrading)
CNRL holds majority non-operated interest in Scotford Upgrader (AOSP). Sulfur pellets from Scotford move via Vancouver chain.
2021–2026 history
- 2021: Horizon and AOSP/Scotford streams continued to generate recovered sulfur as oil sands throughput recovered from pandemic-era cuts. Facility-level Mt/a still not disclosed in CNRL investor materials.
- 2022: Strong then collapsing Pacific sulfur prices altered netbacks for Western Canada formed exports. Horizon sulfur recovery remained tied to upgrader utilization rather than a standalone marketing disclosure.
- 2023: Regional forming expansions (Cheecham Q3 start; Heartland remelt/forming growth path) increased options to convert oil sands sulfur into Vancouver-bound granules without changing CNRL public sulfur tonnage disclosure.
- 2024: Vancouver fertilizer-category sulfur exports near 3.35 Mt kept Western Canada as a stable Pacific supplier. CNRL Horizon remained part of the Fort McMurray sulfur supply band cited in trade press.
- 2025: Alberta inventory draw and remelt economics favored moving oil sands sulfur to tidewater. CNRL-specific stockpile statistics are not published separately from AER provincial aggregates.
- 2026: CRU/BC Insight oil sands sulfur coverage continued to treat Horizon with Suncor/Syncrude as the core Fort McMurray recovered-sulfur complex feeding Vancouver.
